Calvin Grey was born on August 5, 1954 in Oakland, California. Calvin started drawing at the tender age of 4 years old; that was 50 years ago. His grandmother would whoop him for drawing on the walls and now they laugh at the fact that he gets paid for painting murals. He has been producing professional artwork since 1972.

Calvin received the Bank of America achievement award for distinguished performance in the field of art in 1972. San Francisco Art Institute awarded him a certificate of achievement. McClymonds High School appointed him as an Art Academic Mentor.

Calvin attended Lane Jr. College from 1972-1974. He also attended the San Francisco Art Institute from 1978 - 1981.
